Art lovers will find much to interest them in the town’s rich history of painting and sculpture, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the impressionist painter Darío de Regoyos settled in the town and began representing the beauty spots of Bidasoa Bay in his work. Similarly, Vázquez Díaz also lived and worked in the area, and the sculptor Jorge Oteiza created much of his work in his house-workshop in Irun.
As a result, Hondarribia has the highest concentration of art galleries in the Basque Country, and an art fair is held in the town on the first Sunday of each month. The Amaia Cultural Centre in Irun, Zuloaga Etxea in Hondarribia and the Hendaye Municipal Media Archives regularly organise exhibitions.
Moreover, in the Domaine d’Abbadia, the CPIE Littoral Basque and Los Amigos de Abbadia display the work of several artists in Las Landas House during the course of the year. They also organise painting workshops for young people and provide budding artists with a spectacular setting in which to develop their art.
