Euskal Jira

This is the most expressive way of outwardly showing Basque psychology – the nature of the Basque people – strong but fun and happy; their folklore; their way of working; hobbies – both sporting and cultural, their manliness and the femininity of their “neskas”. All of this within a colourful, joyful and typical setting, scattered with happy “kalejiras” (parades), to the sound of “trikitizas” (small accordions) “txistularis” (Basque whistles) and the echo of “irrintzis” (a kind of yodelling).

And in this parade of everything typically Basque, we should not forget the classical “gurdias” or floats, artistically decorated with the oldest symbols of our history or even better “pre-history”. The floats are usually hand-made by amateur artists who take hours choosing the subject-matter and then giving shape to their sketches by using different materials such as paper, hessian, plaster, different types of wood, ivy and ferns… to represent well-known farmhouses, ancient cider houses, rustic foundries, typical watermills, etc.

Irun, which is a strict follower of Basque tradition, has been holding an Euskal Jira (or Basque tour) since 1928, only interrupted by the Spanish Civil War and part of the post-war period. For two years it was organized by the Jostallu Sports Society and coincided with the society’s skiff regattas in the Azkenportu stretch of water near to Pheasant Island. But since 1979 the Euskal Jira has been celebrated without fail every year, normally on the first Saturday in August.
