Oiasso Roman Museum

The Oiasso Roman Museum is an archaeological museum housing the Roman remains uncovered in Irun, pertaining to the old settlement of Oiasso, cited by various Roman sources. The museum’s mission is to disseminate the region’s archaeological heritage and become a benchmark for Roman knowledge and studies in the Bay of Biscay.

The museum also organises a number of different cultural activities focusing on ancient history and archaeology.

Oiasso Roman Museum

The permanent exhibition

The Oiasso Roman Museum was founded as the result of the extraordinary archaeological finds made from the end of the 1960s onwards in the Gipuzkoa town of Irun. As a result of the archaeological excavations, the museum has a series of collections which together reflect everyday life in Oiasso. The majority of objects are everyday utensils, and some differ only very little from those we use today. They are simple objects, which speak of lives easy to imagine from a modern-day perspective. This is the main attraction of the Oiasso Roman Museum: an easily understandable and totally believable journey back in time.

The museum offers visitors the opportunity of learning about the archaeological discovery of the port and everyday life in the town during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD in a fun, entertaining way, through a series of special areas which focus on the impact of the arrival of the Romans on the native society.

Guided tours are also organised to Santa Elena Chapel, where a Roman cemetery was discovered, complete with impressive buildings and over one hundred cremation urns.
The Oiasso Museum offers the following services and attractions:

  • Temporary exhibitions.
  • Guided tours and thematic itineraries targeted at school and family groups.
  • Dynamic workshops.
  • Archaeological itinerary in a Roman train.
  • Guided tours of the archaeological digs in Calle Santiago/Bidasoa (February-March 2009).
  • FICAB (Bidasoa International Archaeological Film Festival).
